So many things it could be. Input shaft, T/C to flex plate bolts, oil pump, low oil. As suggested above, check the fluid level. It will be high if any of the above happened. You can remove the inspection plate and look up there for signs of failures. The T/C shouldn't rotate freely of the engine.

I kinda had an issue like this. Ended up being the shifting fork in the t case. Rebuilt it and all was well, I put it in 4wd and it drove went like a mile put it back in 2wd and it got me home enough to take it apart and try it again. Hope this will narrow it down
