Default Reasonable RPM's?

When towing a trailer it seems necessary to keep the transmission out of overdrive when going up a steep grade. At 55 mph my engine is running a 2,200 in 4th gear. Redline on tack is about 3,300. Is it reasonable to run at the 2,200 for extended periods while going over a pass? Is faster advisable? Just wondering what you guys think is a smart rpm range to not exceed for extended periods. Like 15 miles or so?

Your fine at 2200. I personally wouldn't exceed 2450-2500 RPM for extended periods of time but 2200 ain't hurtin anything. Keep an eye on fuel pressure

I run 2200-2400 Rpm when going up a steep grade, my egts stay below 1000* and keeps the tranny cool... and engine temps..

I agree with the guys above, 2200 is fine. Personally I think a Diesel is the happiest between 1800-2400 RPM, depending on the application.

Yep I agree with raw too, the cummins is happy in that 1800-2400 RPM range, now powerstrokes are happy in the 0 RPM range

We have 6.4s at work on a few of our smaller bucket trucks and we call them powerjokes. if one powerjoke breaks down in our fleet within the next couple weeks they all break down, it spreads like the flu
