Default did my 5th gear nut let go?????

So driving my truck 60mph in 5th and hit the throttle just a little bit and all the sudden it seems as a grenade went off inside the tranny, havent pulled it apart yet but im pretty sure i can see some starter gear laying in the bottom of the housing and thats about it. clutch is rated for 600 horse and i know im not to that mark yet. Would a 5th gear nut cause all this?

When mine went in the 99 it just made a pop and would free rev in 5th. All the other gears worked fine. I wouldn't think 5th gear (rear of tranny)would have anything to do with the starter gear (front of tranny). Did you keep driving? Other gears work? If you stopped maybe it was something with the starter and your 5th gear is fine. Unless you are just seeing things or your clutch was defective.

When it went out it was loud as hell i was expecting the bell housing to have pieces missing from it and when it happened i turned the key right off and shut it down right away, i had a friend with a trailer come get it. from the very small piece i could manage to get out of the housing looks to be something of cast metal. i know hard to say what happened untill its apart but i was not sure if a 5th gear not could cause such a catastrophe

Yea after talking to a few people it might be the flywheel or the clutch and not the 5th gear nut. I talked to a tranny specialist and he said the 5th gear nut coming of wouldnt cause an explosion, cause thats how it sounded. His bet was the shaft bearing or the clutch. The clutch in it is rated for 600 horse but i cant imagine im to that point yet. Going to tear it apart this weekend and find out what went on in there

Well i got the tranny out of the truck but havent took the insides apart yet but from what i can see now is the main shaft snapped, broke the race thats part of the bell housing i guess you would call it and thats it so far. Not sure what has caused it yet though. Lots of torque? Wish I had run the truck on a dyno before this
