Default Tips on buying a used 93' 5.9L engine

Motor is already pulled, supposed to have 120k miles on it. Complete with VE pump and turbo. Turbo is supposed to have very very minimal play and is "good" so I'm told. I need the turbo for a friend whose truck I'm working on anyhow, so I know he'd buy it from me for a reasonable price.

I'm thinking buy the motor, sell the turbo and have the motor for another project. Figure I'd want to upgrade the turbo some anyhow so it could really be a win-win situation. Just wondering if there is any sage advice on buying this, and what you guys feel a fair value is on it being I've never bought a diesel to this point, let alone just the engine.

I've got a 57' Studebaker dually begging for an engine....along with major restoration repair . I've also got a 79' chevy 1 ton dually chassis sitting I could lift the cab and clip on to if it'd make my life that much easier. It's got a ragged out 350/4spd manual sitting in it now. That could amount to several posts in the long run .

The idea of a 250hp 5.9L cummins in that old dually sure does put a smile on my face though Yeah...I know more turbo, pump work, injectors.....maybe more . At the same time I don't want to invest more into buying this old motor than I should.

Thanks!

i guess u want to drop the motor in your chevy, and sell the turbo to your friend. the motor needs the turbo or else it will just be a drag and have no power. thats my research and my .02cents

I totally realize I'll need a turbo down the road to make any use of the motor. A turbo diesel without a turbo is not an option I'm considering. I figure I'll just pick up something better than the h1c down the road. My studebaker/possibly hybrid chevy/stude won't be running for a while I'm sure so I'll have time to collect some parts.

Definitely worth the buy. A friend of mine just picked up a 91 d350 w/180k for $1200 with no transmission just for its Cummins. We pulled the engine and rear, and scrapped the rest for $450. I know this was a great deal, but it gives you somehing to compare to. 250 HP will probably be easier than you think.
