I was under the impression that these weren't synchronized transfer cases, GM made a synchronized 205 briefly but ran into some sort of issue with them, only produced them for a year or two. Without the front end spinning you won't get the desired "shift on the fly" think of it as trying to rake your truck into first without pushing in the clutch. Hubs have to be locked, it's a gear driven transfer case. Can't cram two teeth into one groove , it's all gotta be spinning at the same speed. At low speeds can you pull it into gear with minimal grinding?
