Default How to know year of engine

I purchased what I call a Chummins (Chevy w/cummins Transplant). I was told by the previous owner the motor was a '94. I went to a local diesel performance shop here in town that has worked on the truck before and he stated I was told incorrectly that the motor was a '93. How do I know for sure? I'm guessing it was because they just put a fuel pump on the truck, one being mechanical and the other electrical but that is a guess on my part.

That being said I'm now trying to figure out what reasonable upgrades I can do to the motor/exhaust. I know that my exhaust is an issue 3 3/4" cat and muffler. Looking to do a 4 or 5" straight pipe from the turbo back.

The local diesel shop will do "His Upgrade" for $1400.00. I'm guessing that is a fuel plate or rail change and injectors. He has the same setup but an older truck he gets 20+ for mileage I get lucky to get 10mpg. That is one concern of mine. The other is power. DPU stated he was at 129 rwhp and when he did the modifications he was bumped to 256rwhp . I don't know 100% what the changes are, he's out this week but I definitely would consider it just a bit spendy to do right now and wonder if I can actually do these myself for less. So any suggestions for getting a newbie going?

I have moved my discussions here since it seems I have a G1 motor. Thank you.

This is the pump on a '93 motor (VE pump)

Motor top of a '93

The '94-'98.5 p-pump fuel lines come off the top of the pump and the '89-'93 VE pump lines come off the back.
