Well, if you can't trust those gauges I don't know what gauges you can.

 

Yeah, there's no reason I shouldn't be able to trust those.

Also, some good news: My friend who works at a junkyard back home told me they just got a '99 Ram with a Cummins in, so he put the turbo aside for me. $200 for an HX35 with almost no shaft play and the dowpipe seems like a fair price.

 

Whats almost no shaft play? A little side to side is normal as long as it does not tough the housing. ANY in and out play is bad.

 

Tell that to my old boss. He thinks side to side is bad and an inch in and out is fine, and he's in charge of a 150 vehicle fleet.

 

I'm going home on Wednesday for thanksgiving weekend, so I'll be able to check it out then. Assuming its good, the truck should be back on the road within the week.

 

I say you blew your bearing and ect.

 

Well I picked up a like-new H1C for cheap today and got it all back together. I took the power off the injection pump and cranked the engine for a little bit to circulate the oil, and there was an intermittent squeaking noise. I hooked the power back on the injection pump, and the engine started right up. It ran great for around 5 seconds, and then there was a metal-on-metal noise so I shut it down. I couldn't really tell where it came from unfortunately.

 

Sounds like a possible spun bearing.

 

I had a friend take a look at it that knows these motors pretty well, and he thinks its the cam bearing. Regardless, the truck is down until winter break when I'll have a chance to tear it apart.

 

Interesting, I wouldn't think cam bearings are too common of a failure part?? Let us know what you find during tear down.
