Default VGT or HX40?

I want to do a new turbo in my 89 because the stock one aint worth sh*t. My question is, Should i put a Holset HX40 with a smaller exhaust housing on it? Or a VGT (variable geometry turbo)? Oh and how much am i looking to spend on this? AKA what is cheaper?

you might be best off doing a GDS 60mm upgrade for your turbo with a 14cm housing for around 250$ and push 40 lbs of boost!! oh yea and it sounds sweet!!

I have a HX40 with a 14cm housing off an HX35 thats been machined out to fit over the HX40 wheel. I love it, before that my old truck ran a S300 varient.

I've never run the VGT but alot of guys are doing great things with them.

Thats alot of boost for that turbo. Most of it is hot air thats not helping.

If it's in good shape, some in and out play is OK and a very tiny bit of side to side is acceptable, very little. Defiantly should not touch the housing. Also make sure it has a 16cm housing.

I love my VGT. Does over 50psi on my 89 but I keep it under 40 since 40-50 isnt much difference and is just hot air. Dont worry about drive pressure, I can get more boost than drive press out of mine sometimes. (it IS possible, PSI does not = flow, just restriction of the intake)

I wouldn't touch it with a 10-foot pole at that price - obviously needs rebuilt.
