History Lesson:

1978 and 1979 Dodges came with a 6 cylinder NISSAN diesel, which, unlike the Cummins was available in even a 1/2 ton package.
I've seen several, in fact a friend of mine still owns a (repowered) '79 Extended Cab 2wd version.

The Mitsubishi trucks, as well as D-50, or Arrow, mini-trucks used a Turbo-Charged Mitsubishi 4 cylinder Diesel from about 1981 through '85(?).

I have HEARD of 1991 Cummins trucks with the updated computer in the fender, but have yet to actually see one in person, much less one thats a pre-production (meaning made when they weren't supposed to be) Extended Cab truck.

Chrysler had a habit of sending what's called "Pilot" vehicles out when technically they were just test mules for setting up the line in pre-production runs.
Many are usually destroyed.

Mark.

Every thread I've ever seen about those old trucks (on 1stgen.org or DTR) said they were a Mitsubishi. But I've never seen one in person so...

dodge and mitsubishi had a close relationship. Like the dodge colt and the early k cars and dodge caravans had 4 cyl mitsubishi engines. I was told they did that untill they developed a 4 cyl engine. Since in the seventies, they build 8 & 6 cyl engines.

Default The first Club Cab trucks

Hello, everyone

I know this is an older thread but I love reading up on truck history.

Dodge first came out with the club cab back in 1972 (1973 for CANADA).
My father still has his 1974 Dodge Club Cab 1/2 ton 4x4 - back then they even put the "Power Wagon" name plate on the hood.

Dodge toyed with diesels back in 1984 by placing a small 4-cyl detroit - that lasted for onr model year - I know I test drove one.

In 1989, Dodge placed the cummins turbodiesel into there full size trucks.

I knew it had to be earlier than the cummins era trucks... I see an well-used older D200 locally thats got the birdbath hood.

I have a Mitsubishi 6DR5 (~4.0L) from a 78 D100. They were the factory Dodge diesel of the day.

The Nissan SD33 (similar physical size) came IH Scouts toward the late 70's.
