PLEASE HELP! TRAN. PROBLEMS
Hey guys,
I have 93 Dodge Diesel 4x4 and was shifting out of 3rd into 4th and felt amost spongy. Totally locked up! Would not move at all. Was wondering if anyone had a diagram of the rag transmission? Or if you may think you know what is wrong with it? Tranny was replaced about 20,000 miles ago!
THANKS EVERYONE!

Do you have any idea what kind of hp your truck has? Is it leaking at all? New, salvaged, or rebuilt tranny? Also, have you rebuilt or replaced ur t case? Could be that and not the transmission. What happens when you try to drive it does it just go nowhere like its in neutral or does it kill it when you let the clutch out? The transfer cases in the first gens are chain driven and if ur truck has done some serious towing in its life then it just might be that. Try putting 4x4 shifter in n then put it in 4th and see what happens.

Just because the OP mentioned something seemed to happen in the process of shifting from 3rd to 4th, I'm gonna lean towards a tranny problem. No idea exactly what it might be yet, tho.
Can you row the shifter through the gears normally sitting there parked, not running?
If it's not stock and he did the work he probably knows enough about it fix it himself.

If the trans or the transfer case was run low on oil, the gears could have "welded" themselves to the shaft, so effectively it's in multiple gears all at once, regardless of where the blocker rings are. It could have happened inside the transfer case too, jamming that in hi/lo at the same time. All I can suggest is to start taking parts off and see which is locked up.

Anything's Possible
Of course anything's possible, but the typical failure mode for low oil in the rag is bearings, and they will make a helluva racket for a long time before they finally come apart.
