Default hx-35w if it was free?

hey fellas,

Been lurking for a while now but figured I oughtta sign up since I couldn’t find a definitive answer to my question: if someone handed you a HX-35w in solid working order, is it worth the time to make the swap? most of what I have found says that the swap is pretty simple and the upgrade (although marginal) is worth it...but a few posts say that it is pure hell getting it to work and the payoff isn’t worth the hassle.

Reason I ask is my buddy offered his HX-35w off his 94 3500 auto to replace my stock HY in my 92 w250 auto

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance

Micah

I would do the swap for sure, you going to gain 3cm on your exh housing. To my knowledge, the HY's have a 9cm housing and HX's a 12cm usually. A slight (very small) reduction in spool up, but breathers better at higher rpm's and load. Less drive pressure is safer.

The HY was the stock turbo on 2nd gen trucks, '99 and up, (I think. Maybe it was 2000... whatever.) not stock on 1st gens. Or did you mean the HY hasn't been altered or modified in any way?
Either way, Ryan is right, the HX will breathe better at higher rpms. I wouldn't hesitate to throw it on. And besides, it's free so if you don't like it, you can just change it back again. All you would have lost is a couple of hours.
If you do have an HY on there, AFAIK the HX should be a direct swap. If you have an H1C, (stock 1st gen turbo) it should also be a direct swap, although you will need to modify your downpipe to fit, if you have the stock 1st gen one. If you have the HY downpipe fitting, it should go straight on.

your right KD93. brain fart on my end. the stock snail (H1c) is what is on my truck now unmolested. as far as downpipes go, i also have a new complete 4" exhaust system sitting in the garage waiting to bolt up to the HX35w. sounds like all i need is for my buddy to come through on his end!

I did this swap. It is worth it. Quite easy it's a direct R&R. Make sure to buy a new drain back gasket.
