Trying to figure which auto trans I've got. Can anyone tell me some info on how to id my trans. I bought a 91.5 i/c motor and it came with an automatic attached and I don't know much about these autos. it's a 4x4 with a np205. Thanks

if it has O/D then it is a 518. if it doesn't then it is a 727. if yours is i/c then i would guess it is the 518 with O/D. good luck

Hey thanks a lot. I checked the shifting on it and seemed to be a three speed.... Is the o/d electronic or manual (i.e. does the shifter have 1 2 3 d or 1 2 d and a button on the shifter?) I don't have the truck, just engine and trans so I can't check my self. there are a few electrical connections on the trans, not sure how much electronics would run the 727.

the overdrive on the 518 will come automatically if the tps works right, but does have a button you can press to turn it off.

the 518 has an overdrive scabbed on to it where the tail shaft or coupler to the transfer case should be. mine has two electrical plugs on the shift linkage side. if you are going to use this combo in another make you can make the od activate via a manual switch.
