lift pump guestion
Could someone tell me how my truck still run when the lift pump does not pump any fuel?Because I took my lift pump off to change it and noticed that the rod that is supposed to be connected to the arm that pumps the fuel is not connected anymore and my new one didnt work right so I put the old one back on and it starts and runs fine.I was just wondering why?
If the next new one does the same thing as the other one did then I guess I will just keep using it.

the injection pump can supply its self some fuel but not enough... its bad for the injection pump to starve it for fuel because it gets its lubrication and cooling from the diesel itself.
you need to get it taken care of.

When I put the new one on its was hard to start like it was getting air in the line so I put the old one back on but im getting another one tomorrow if it does the same thing what should I do the old one does not do that?
Piston pumps are okay, but I'd go with an electric pump.
Easier prime up, with more consistant and reliable pressure.
It will also eliminate the potential for "making oil" due to a ruptured diaphragm.
Mark.

Ya get an electric pump or piston pump. I put a 366 spring in my injection pump and my stock lift pump does not even supply enough fuel above 2800 rpm or so, it starts defueling. I am going to run a holley blue or black, you can get one for $100 or less. . .
I think the holley blue out of the box is regulated at 14psi with the internal spring which I have been told will work great on our trucks. I am new to this fourm, but I know on Cumminsforum.com there are several threads about people putting holley blues on their 1st gens. I will try to find a link a and post it up.

Holley Blue - Dodge Cummins Diesel Forum
Heres a link to a holley pump discussion that I read a while ago. I am going to do a holley blue on my truck because I have one laying in the garrage I bought previously for a different car and never used it. Some people say run the Holley black because it is rated for alcohol and will last longer, but there are a couple guys in the forum running blues and have been for 5 years or so. . . .
Also the blue you do not have to regulate from what I understand.

This place has re-tagged Holley pumps at a reasonable price.
This page is a listing of electric pump/fuel related stuff, in general:
Speedway Motors - Product Summary
A little trick to get more pressure cheaper is to order the pump you want, and a rebuild kit for a higher pressure pump.
The Holley pieces cross over to this advertiser's pumps.

BTW, IIRC, the timing in a VE can be affected by pressures @ 15psi or more.
You might want to check me on that, but I'm certain I recall reading that somewhere.
