Thats the problem with the dodge trannys. I was always afraid I was going to toast mine when I had a first gen. There is a site on the net that sells rebuild kits.700R4, 700 Raptor Transmission from PATC, 700R4 4L60E 48RE 4L80E. They seem to have all the high performance rebuild goodies. but they are spendy. If you could find all the parts, I would swap in the 5 speed!

keep auto or do a 5 speed?
If you do auto how much HP do you want to put out?
If you do a 5 speed Getrag or NV 4500?
2WD or 4WD?
theres alot involved in the 5 speed swap and all in all unless you get a 5 speed donor truck its a PITA
IMO I would through down about 1000-3000 and get a nice auto with a good converter
(if you want to go fast and have lots of HP) but if you want a good DD and a little over stock for the HP then just do a basic rebuild

If you wanna go fast, auto. If you wanna pull ****, 5-speed.
The 518 will take alot of abuse being non-lock up. A mild build with a good converter should hold you fine unless you plan on making 450hp+ and sled pull. At least your parts will be relitivly cheap being a 518... The 300M output shaft for my 727 was $1k...
What happened to your tranny?

A good place to start would be opening it up to see how bad it actually is, sometimes you can can get away with an in-truck repair and get mobile again.
If not, at least pull it out and take it apart, see what is actually wrong with it, a basic steels-frictions-and-seals rebuild only costs a couple hundred bucks, and its nothing you cant do in an afternoon on the tailgate if it came right down to it(theres a pretty nice e-manual type deal in the sticky thread if you havent done one before)
Of course all that is just my 2 cents, and in the grand scheme of things it probably aint even worth that! but there is a purpose to my reply, I have to pass on a warning: If you do pull it apart on your own(and havent dealt with the internals of the 518 before) DO NOT attempt to disassemble the overdrive housing(rear section of the unit) without finding direction on the proper procedure-you need an arbor press to do this safely- the direct spring in there has somewhat of the same potential as the app. spring in a big rig style brake pot, it is bound up in there under somewhere around 1000psi of tension, only a snap ring holding it in there, it'll kill ya if your standing in its way when it comes out
