speedometer problems

My truck is a 1992 cc drw Manual trans. I tried searching but got answers that said my truck doesnt have a cable. Well my truck has a cable coming out of the gertrag trans. I have a new cable that the previous owner gave to me. Was going to install it todat but I cant find where it goes throough the firewall. The prvious owner disconected it in the engine compartment. Can anyone help?

Thanks Matt

i have a 1991 getrag and it uses a vehicle speed sensor (vss) ive seen quite a few cummins trannys over time and never once have i seen one with a cable:humm:

on the 2wd its located right at the back of the tailshaft or right around there. and on a 4wd its on the transfer case. got any pics? and is it a factory speedometer or aftermarket?

orangeamcs 03-07-2010 03:04 PM

factory speedo and cable coming out of trans on drivers side and runs up the tunnel and is unplugged and tied up on the master cylinder now

stackx2 03-07-2010 03:36 PM

sounds to me like the speedo went out before and somebody put a cable on it thinking that would work to fix it and then left it tied up under the hood. you could take the dash out and see if it still has the factory electic plugs on the back of the speedo. i have never seen one first gen with a cable it should have the vss on it

orangeamcs 03-07-2010 04:25 PM

cable actually broken in middle. Cant find any plug by the transmission for a vss. Im new to this truck though so I could be missing something.

stackx2 03-07-2010 04:51 PM

this is how it is suposed to look on the transfer case if your truck is four wheel drive, hope this helps.

truck is 2wheel and has a cable into the side of trans.ill look again tommorow and take pics. Need to fix this and ebrake cable to inspect it so I can get tags this week. Then I can work on the fun stuff

tltruckparts 03-07-2010 09:56 PM

take a picture for us so we can see what your talking about. were telling you that they didnt use cables. someone before you may have hacked something. get us a pic so we can help you more

stackx2 03-08-2010 12:46 AM

on the back of the tailshaft housing

stackx2 03-08-2010 12:48 AM

oh, good to know thanks

Found a few wires under the truck that may go to the long gone vss. One is two wires missing the plug. The wire colors are black or dark green and white w orange strip. The other is a single wire deutsch style connector. Thinking im going to need a vss and a pig tail? does that sound right. Guessing its the two wires missing the connector. Oh well at least I fixed the emergency brake today and may turn the pump up

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

looks like I need the pigtail and sensor. Is the sensor calibrated differently for each truck or are they all the same?

orangeamcs 03-15-2010 03:49 PM

anyone have the dodge part number for the vss

tltruckparts 03-15-2010 03:53 PM

go to your local parts store like napa or oreilly or whatever is near you. just give them the make and model theyll be able to get you one. the pigtail may be hard to find.but those are the correct wires. black is the ground and white/orange is the pulse wire iirc

orangeamcs 03-15-2010 03:58 PM

have dodge on phone now. trying to get it delivered to my shop

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

5252438 doe that seem right

tltruckparts 03-15-2010 04:21 PM

no idea. i dont have a dodge catalog. just tell them your make and model and that you need a vehicle speed sensor. not like theres 10 different ones or antyhing

orangeamcs 03-15-2010 05:35 PM

napa is dropping it off tommorow w the connector. I feel like there is something missing still. Looking at a schematic and it looks like there is a piece that goes between the the vss and transmission?

there is a little adapter coupler thing. i dont know what it looks like on a 2wd to be honest all mine are 4x4. but thats most likely an only dodge part or possibly a wrecking yard

orangeamcs 03-17-2010 10:02 AM

sensor from napa came w pig tail harness:jump:

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Ok speedo works smoothly but reads about 40mph off at 30mph. Guess I need the gear reduction thing that goes between the transmission and sensor. Anybody have any info on these.

tltruckparts 03-17-2010 01:01 PM

call the dealer and get a part number. even if its discontinued a part number will get you along ways

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

https://www.dieselbombers.com/1st-ge...nsor-pics.html check that thread out itll show you what you need

orangeamcs 03-17-2010 05:03 PM

that part doesnt show up on the schematics from dodge

tltruckparts 03-17-2010 06:00 PM

your going to have to go hunting for it. when i needed one for mine i had to search everywhere for one. i found one at my local 4x4 distributor he had a junked 205 layin there with that already in it so he gave it to me

seandonato73 03-17-2010 06:26 PM

yeah they can be a pain to finde, one of my stupid friends broke mine off when i put my clutch in my truck. ended up driving to a jumk yard 50 miles away for another one. but thats just my luck.

I just put a Cummins 1st. gen in my Ford. Anybody ever try to put a cable on the Getrag and hook it to the Ford speedo?? Will this work?? I found a speedo shop that can make a cable with Ford top,,, Getrag bottom.

Should work just fine, as long as you put in the correct ratio adapter. You'll need 2 cables: One from the trans to the RA, and then another one connecting the RA to the speedo. Exactly what RA you may need will take some guessing and experimentation, depending on tire size, etc.

I suppose it's not outside the realm of possibility you can just hook it up with one cable and it will be close enough. :humm:

my speedometer is not working at all nor is the cruise control. Looks like a vacum powered cruise control as there are lines from the vacumn assist on MC. The fuse is a 2 amp and it looks good. The VSS looks good but the nut was loose which I tightened.

any ideas?
