back yard mechanics: welder. real world, longevity, and proper mechanics would be to get a whole new carrier. good news is just changing the carrier wont require any extra rear end setting up if you stick with the same ring set. i've looked into units and they're around mid 500's to low/mid 700's all depends on what you're lookin for. i had an eaton tru track limited slip unit in the gasser and it'd rip both wheels like a posi like nothing, very rarely broke one tire loose unless in a turn, but most limited slips "favor" one side. detroit locker is a bit more expensive than a limited slip unit but its 100% power equally to both wheels.

If it's done right it is fine. But since you live where you live, I would opt for a selectable locker. A welded rearend will make winter driving hell. On slick roads your *** end will try and pass the front end and it isn't fun to deal with. Also, you will experience "chirping" when going around corners, because the inside tire naturaly wants to rotate faster than the outer tire. ARB is the only selectable locker for our trucks. Eaton E-lockers and OX lockers only go up to a Dana 60.

I have a factory unit that if the guy looking at it now does not want it you can have it for teh cost of shipping. It worked when it was pulled.
