Got a new pair of 2 bulb headlights coming, is going to hook them up with a rely.
It is fairly simple, this will be some good reading, have fun.

sorry I didnt see it sooner. But for those who are wondering what your doing is instead of getting the power to light the bulbs in yer headlights directly from the headlight switch, on the stock puny wiring, what your doing is getting an alternative power source and using the headlight switch, for exactly that. A switch. And by using better wiring, and relays the added result is brighter lights, and the headlight switch running cooler, and longer.

blowing a little dust off of this thread, I was looking at the site that Saab9k posted a link to, didn't know Hella had some pretty cool options for lighting for our 1st gens. First is the Euro code housings for an H4 bulb conversion...gives you some pretty awesome bulb selection options and up to 110/85W lighting.

Or there's their DOT legal lense with a replaceable HB2 bulb, for a 60/55W hi/lo.

I just had a headlight go out, I'm going to just grab a cheapy at Napa for now 'cause I just got pulled over last night; but relays and some Hella lights seem pretty awesome, anyone tried either of these lights?

and what relay do I want to use? A SPDT (single pole - double throw)? I need to look at the wiring diagram in my service manual.

I have not done the relay's on the 1st gen yet, but I have Bosch E code headlights. (same as the Hella's but Bosch) I really like them. Much better foreground illumination, better vision in rain, snow, fog from the flat cutoff of the beam. Great highbeam. I recommend them.
