My "Old Bomber" is a 1991 Dodge D-250 Cummins with 194,000 on her. Bought it new in Feb. '91.
My power steering has little assist on a left turn and little or none on a right turn. After running for a while, it seems to improve but not by much. The fluid will foam up and "puke" out of the P/S reservoir. When I shut off the engine I can hear pressure and the fluid spewing out from under the cap of the P/S pump reservoir... Does anyone have an idea or suggestion what is going wrong before I trial and error myself crazy??

 

Believe your needing a new pump.

 

steering gear may also be messed up, the piston that moves back and forwarth in the box has a seal on each end... if the housing gets scored and or the seals are leaking it can cause the same issue... as for it getting better when warmed up it's refered to as "morning sickness" crappy power steering on initial start up, once warmed up it's slightly better... it's usully a symptom of the steering gear. as for the pump; it may be getting weak too. but the pump pressure doesnt know the difference from left to right so it wouldnt have the symptom of crappy steering one way and crappier the other way

 

"GEAR BOX" had same symptoms last year ..changed gear box.all gone...........then added borgeson steering shaft and changed drag link bar ....1000% better ride...no more lane swaying

 

Gear Box, best friend had the same thing happen a month ago new gear box fixed the problem and while your doin it you should order new feed and return lines it doesnt hurt.

I would also go with the gear box or the pump. Have you checked the level of the fluid? Wait until it has sat over night so all the foam is gone and check the level.

 

I have the same exact power steering woes, but the fluid gets black and never seems to get low even when it has been boiling out. Could engine oil be getting into the power steering pump? I replaced a leaky hose and put new fluid in and it drove great for one day.

Try this mine was doin the same thing

 

engine oil has no way to come into contact with your p/s system resevoir; if it is turning your fluid black i'd look into pump problems. the pump may be getting hot and scorching your fluid.
