One other issue is there are 2 different axle widths. The cab and chassis is narrower then the 1 ton with a factory bed. Once and a while you see a 3.07 ratio rear for sale. There is NO ring and pinion available from ANYWHERE. The only hope is to find a good used set. I have heard that there is a sterling 10.5 inch rear that has the option of a 3.07 aftermarket ring and pinion. As far as I know there is no other full floater of any brand that has the option of the 3.07's. I was lucky when my 89 blew up. I found a good used rear for a grand. I know of one guy that had close to 3 k in a 3.07 cab and chassis rear after he bought it and it needed a full bearing and brake rebuild.

One more way around it is to replace the tranny with a 4 speed auto and go with a 3.54 rear that is still available. There is always ways around trouble. Just depends how much you want to spend. Ok I will shut up now.

Richie Pretty much nailed it. Thanks Man! Its noce to have your good advoce over here! Sootman don't be detered. That is a good deal on an axle and even after spending the money to get a 3.07 dual rear yuo will still be ahead assuming the truck is in OK shape. Good luck!

thanks. thinking about swapping a 518 in place of the 727. would that change anything?
or does anyone know of a cheap dana70 w/3.07's dirt cheap. i only have about $2,500 to do this truck.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

would a dana 70 out of a 78 chevy camper work or would that require alot of modifications too?

that would work, you'd get overdrive. you could run the 14 bolt with 3.73s. your speeds wouldn't be as high but it wouldn't be that bad.

Once again you need to take measurements on spring width and perch width and what gears are in it? 78 gasser Chev with camper pagage I'm gonna guess 4:10 which would give you a top speed of 45... I don't really know the last part but you won't be going anywhere fast...

If your going to swap in a 518 (overdrive tranny) then it will work with some mods. (not a direct drop in) a dana 80 out of a 2nd gen would be a nicer swap then that 70 but might cost you more.
