Air to Dry Ice Intercooler....

im thinking about building one for my drag truck, 90 dodge D250, it will be a double pass style made out of aluminum.....it will be an aluminum diamond plate box (bought eight 4x8 sheets of diamond plate for $20 a piece) with a removeable top so i can fill it with dry ice, here is a picture i drew of want i want to build, now obviously im going to be using round curved pipe, and have it setting on stands welded inside the box so the ice can go under it and all around it keeping it cool.....the blue is the ice and the gray is the tubes.....the main pipe coming in will be 3 inch, it will wye into dual 3 inch (maybe 2.5) tubes, pass through the cooler, back into a dual 3 inch (maybe 2.5) wye and back into a single 3 inch outlet.....it will be about 6 inches thick, 25 inches wide and 30 inches long.....i may redesign it and use smaller tubing but im not sure yet......what do you guys think???? suggestions, comments....aftermarket air to air aluminum one from most diesel places is 1100-1500 bucks, i can probably make this air to ice one for well under 100 bucks.....

looks like good thinking! If it works or not... Only one way to find out!

i know you had talked about a water one, but water and drag racing dont mix cause one drip on that track and your DQed......i think this one will be easier to handle and manage compared to a flow through design and i can mount this on the inner fenderwell, im also thinking about flow through with a bunch of smaller tubes but that may just be asking for a boost leak.....i think double 2.5 or 3 inch pipes should flow good enough since im only feeding it with a single 3 inch pipe.....

i did some figuring and came up with this (rough guesstimates here people).....the large outter pipe will be around 75 inches long and 3 inches in diameter, that equates to 525 cubic inches of air, the short inner pipe will be about 56 inches long and 3 inches in diameter and that equates to about 400 cubic inches of air.....together that is 925 cubic inches of air space, now for comparative area, a 10 foot long piece of 3 inch pipe hold 850 cubic inches of air......so i should have well more than enough room to not hinder the air flow with whatever the bends cause......i will have about 3 feet between the turbo and the cooler and about 5-6 feet from the cooler to the intake on the head....

also remember those numbers are at atmospheric pressure....the boost will make a big difference.....

There has to be a point where you can cool the air to the point that you start hindering combustion, right?

What about one or several large tube-and-canister-type oil coolers?

But there is plenty of areas on the truck for leaks already, I would not let that be teh deciding factor, I do like your idea and would like to see yuor build on it! Keep us up to date.

got a pic of one?? i dont think the air traveling through there will be cooled down to the point it will hurt combustion....

yeah but my truck dont leak.....i dont need a big box full of ice water under the hood though cause that is just asking for it.....

Something like this.

Air through the tubes, dry ice around them.

That is an awesome idea right there begle

It'd be cool if you could find one big enough to flow enough and light enough to not slow you down.
