Default Temperature Sensor

Hello everyone, I'm new to the world of diesel engines..just bought a 91 dodge w250 N/I, 5 spd manual, its running hot and as i started going through possible solutions i purchased a temperature sensor. The photos show the sensor located at the back of the engine on drivers side. The fitting that is in there now has an 90 degree elbow with a single wire attached, the new fitting is a straight fitting with a clip type connector.
Is that where the new sensor is suppose to go and why does it have a different connector...or is it the wrong part. New part num. standard TX71T.
trying to attach photos, but keep getting told file upload failed
