Default Cummins Transmission

I am building a chevy cummins and i am trying to get stuff figured out. I got the adapter plate, flywheel, and starter for a cummins with a turbo 400. Ive figured out that i dont want to use a turbo 400 because of no overdrive and only 3 gears and that i would be high rpms. So now ive been thinking about a manual. I need educated about manuals. The 2nd gens have nv4500's right? And do they need an adapter plate to bolt up to the cummins? And if i were to build this manual transmission, would it hold? Cause ive heard so many things about dodge transmissions that i dont know what is right and what is wrong.

all cummins have a adapter plate to what ever trans you use..the adapter to a 400 is expensive..did you consider a gear vendor?? that's what I have with a th400 and love it..

I too can highly recommend the GV. Just about any of the trans in the class used behind the Cummins can be built to hold the power. Most of the horror stories about Dodge transmissions can be attributed to factors apart from the trans itself, along with the Internet amplification phenomenon. The GV gives you the ability to run deep gears for heavy towing and off-road along with good highway cruise.

Well im convinced that i want to have a manual now. i just dont know what tranny i want. I just need someone to educate me whether to go nv4500 or nv5600. Can someone tell me what needs to go to an nv4500 be reliable at decent power levels? Ive done some research and see that there are problems with 5th gear sometimes? I dont know much about transmissions. Would it be better to buy a dodge nv4500 that needs rebuilt and if it were, what would be the best rebuild kit? Also, what is the average price on a nv4500 that needs rebuilt? HELP!!

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

ive done a little more research and im pretty sure im not going to buy an nv5600 because they say its for towing and i wouldnt be doin very much towing. i also found about the 5th gear failure, the 5th gear nut. Also found out about rpm drop from 3rd to 4th gear in the nv4500. Seems to me, most people say fix the 5th gear nut, aftermarket main shaft, and a south bend clutch.

sorry forgot to say but i have a np205 transfercase gear to gear. Would i have to divorce it from the nv4500 or would it be better to get a different transfercase?

im trying to find a trans for my chummins also. so im in the same boat, cant decide if i want a stick nv4500 or getrag 360 or if i want an auto. right now i have a cummins sitting in a 84 k30. its kind of a work truck and im starting to like it, planed on pulling the motor and building a crew cab. now i think im going to get another cummins (have one sitting right now) and get a crew cab to build it up.

state farm insurance lady told my wife that she thinks i might have a problem. apparently having 4 chevy trucks (79,84,86 and 94) and a chevy impala is a sign of being a collector lmao. and she doesnt even know about the crew cab yet

the nv4500 can have a couple different output shafts depending on what it cam out of same deal with the 205 if its chevy it can have 10 splines (i think pre 83???? on sm465) the th350 had a 27 spline shaft the th400 had a 32 spline shaft there are 2 different lengths on the 32 splines also (post 85)

yes those transmissions were used in many different applications, light, medium and heavy duty, so make sure to get the correct one used behind the Cummins or build it yourself for that purpose.

i saw a nv4500 on ebay just looking at pictures of them and one of them had the adapter from the end of the transmission to the transfercase and it had 6 bolts on it in like a hexagon shaped pattern, and np208 transfercases have that exact same bolt pattern, so would it work?

yes only if both are 32 splines, the 208 can 32 behind the th400 and sm465. 27 spline which came behind a TH350 or 700R4. and you dont need a adapter with the 205 or 208. i found a nv4500 and tcase didnt ask what type because i was blow away when the guy said 3500 for it

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

but i have a question for others, does the nv4500 have to be 4x4 or 4x4 for a direct bolt on? GM or dodge? what does it take to mate a cummins to gm nv4500?

i dont know if you know but im talking dodge nv4500. I talked to a guy at advanced adapters and he said a dodge 205 would be perfect. Now can someone help me on estimated prices? I went on ebay and found a dodge 205 for $700 completely rebuilt with new input gear and extreme load bearing. Is this average price for one?
