Finally bought my first one
Hey guys, I've been lurking for a bit and finally took the plunge. I picked up a '92 ext cab 2wd dually with a getrag. It's a complete beater, but it was cheap and I'm in love. Pump has been turned up and it has a bit of a hybrid turbo from what I understand. According to the PO: "It's an H1C with a larger hx35 wheel. Also has a 16cm non-gated exhaust housing. 56mm compressor wheel."
My first question is this... When I picked it up, the truck felt strong, and my buddy that was following me home told me to keep my foot out of it because he couldn't see anything. The further I went, the weaker it felt. It's to the point now where it barely smokes at all. My first thought was fuel filter, because I knew the truck had been sitting for a bit and who knows when it was changed last. I replaced it and it made no difference. My next guess would be lift pump? Although I was told that it had just been replaced (and it does look new). Anyway, I've been searching through old threads on LP upgrades, mechanical vs electric, big money setups vs budget recipes, etc... but most of the info I've found seems to be 3 or 4 years old. I'm a VW nut, too, and I know that the best setup of any type is constantly evolving. What would you guys recommend for someone on a budget?

Dump the contents of your fuel filter into a clean container and see what comes out. If it's dirty I'd suggest cleaning the fuel tank. Another place to check is the air filter and intake. Check the induction system for boost leaks. Check the turbo, make sure the compressor wheel hasn't come loose on the shaft.

Before jumping into a pump overhaul, disconnect the fuel tank from the lift pump and plumb a container direct to the lift pump. That will eliminate the fuel tank as being the problem. Also, lift pumps are cheap compared to the injection pump. So don't be afraid to throw another one on there. Fuel tanks can grow algae that can block or restrict the fuel outlet. The tank vent can also get blocked causing a vacuum in the tank that restricts fuel flow.

I did some more poking around the other night, and found that the pump is leaking. A steady drip coming off the bottom of the pump body that is getting progressively worse, along with performance. Time to get my hands dirty... I've found a few pump rebuild diy's that seem to be really good, but can anyone direct me to a good place to buy the reseal/rebuild kit? I want to make sure that I have quality parts if I'm gonna dig into this.
