Wanting to buy a 1st gen

hey guys. so im going to college in the fall to work on all types of cummins engines. so i thought to myself, why not get a cummins! ive been looking here and there for them. everyone has tld me to get the 2nd gen 12 valves. im just not too fond of the body style and what not. what i really like is the 1st gen 12 valves.

so here is my question: when looking at a 1st gen, what good things should i look for? what things should i look out for? are these reliable trucks? i know cummins is one of the best diesel engines out there. but the dodge part is what ive really worried about. what problems do 1st gens normally have? i have a 7.3 idi factory turbo diesel right now and ive thought of doing a swap but for the amount of money it costs id be better off buying a dodge with a cummins.

so if someone could give me some advice thatd be great!!
