Default Battery over heating

I have a 1991 dodge cummins. I few moths ago the battery stopped charging so I replaced the voltage regulator, it ended up being the alternator. It did fine for 3 months but today I was driving it and noticed a burning smell, the tempo gauge was fine but the battery seemed to be over charging. When I got home the battery was very hot. What could be causing this?
