Default Questions about basic mods and EGT

im brand new here and looking forward to getting some advice. I've got an untouched, stock 89 cummins. I do a lot of heavy towing with it (13,000). This year I will be doing even more and have to haul 2000 rounds bales over a pass (several trips) so I need more power! I don't want to do a lot of mods, just enough to get some power. I'm thinking Fuel pin and star gear adjustment. Could a guy tow 16000 with an automatic with those mods and do I need to worry about EGT with those two mods while towing. Thanks in advance for the help!

you should get an egt gauge before anything. Then you can tune the whole pump as in starwheel, full powerscrew, etc. Then I'd say you get a 3200 rpm governor spring instead of the stock 2500 rpm one. You can pick them up for 20 bucks. And then get the fuel pin, probably a denny t would be your best bet. Also gillet diesel sells the upgraded 60mm compressor wheel for your turbo which helps alot.

From what I've read, and from your ideas it sounds like, gauges first, then fuel pin, rpm spring, and pump dialing. Then I was going to get a bigger air intake, and bigger exhaust. The tranny has not been done yet but I am planning to do it since this truck has been in the family since new and I don't plan on selling it. I don't mind putting some money into it as long as i can get it to pull the big loads I need to (18,000) I hope after doing all this. Anything else you guys would do?

TransGo or B&M shift kit and a good convertor ie Goerend, SunCoast or Specrite for the tranny and a 16cm turbine housing to go with the 60mm compressor upgrade for the turbo. These mods along with those already mentioned should do what you want. You might also want to upgrade to a piston lift pump.

more rpms at your disposal ---->>>> better ability to smoothly bridge the gaps between gears

and, even when the torque converter, and the lubricant-plumbing is designed for a Diesel's low rpms, they work nicer at higher ranges.

Great advice guys. Thank you all. Now for getting the money together

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Well just ordered a pyrometer and a k and n filter along with a Denny t stage one pin. How far should I turn the star gear? Also does the rpm spring help with an auto tranny? Wouldnt the tranny shift before realizing the higher rpms?
