Default where to start for performance modifications

I have a 1993 intercooled 5 speed cummins. I want to start adding performance modifications to it but have no clue where to start. Engine is around 270,000 miles its been owned by my family since it was brand new. the transmision was rebuilt and alot of things were overhauled in the engine. Any help would be greatly appreciated. And for the additional question, are there any drawbacks to smokestacks when it comes to performance versus a regular perfomance exhaust

Gauges first then pump tweaks. Stay away from stacks it takes up valuable bed space and gets soot everywhere Especialy when water gets in. Plus there is way too many people with them now when I did mine it was the first time I seen a truck with a single stack and I did it to be different and cool and now I see it almost every day. And the noise is probly one of the best sounding exhaust I've ever heard but it is LOUD and it gets old

Thanks for the info on the stacks. I figured the noise probably got old i had a 5 inch pipe on my 98 that came out just past the cab and got old quick also. Ho do i start tweaking the pump? What fule pin is best on the market? do I do the govemor spring the same time? is there anything else that needs to be done when changing the govenor spring to safely add power?

Gauges first, then 4" exhaust and a high flow air filter, 3200 gov.spring and tweak the IP. Then you will want to upgrade your lift pump. After these you will want it figure out what you want to do with your truck ie daily driver, tow rig etc. when you get that figured out its time to check out injectors and a turbo that will take you to the power level you are looking for. Good luck and have fun with it.

Boost, egt and trans temp as well as maybe a tach...then 4 inch turbo back, homemade intake with BHAF, denny t stage 2 fuel pin, pump tweaks, 3200 gov spring...that will put you arond 250 hp...if you want more than you will need POD injectors and a bigger turbo. After that you better have a big wallet. I would also recommend that you put a better clutch in that old 5 speed to help it put up with that new power. Blown transmissions are no fun.

What they said! Do all the simple stuff first. You can get close to 300 Horses with little or no money. Minor stuff will get you to 300, above that you need injectors, pump, turbo work....and that costs....
