1989 dodge cummins 300-400
Hey guys im looking at buying a 1989 dodge cummins 4x4 dually with an automatic. it has around 250,000 miles.i am wanting to get 300-400hp out of it. i am wondering what it will cost to make the transmision handle it,and last. I dont really want a 5 speed but if it would be alot cheaper to put a 5 speed with an upgraded clutch in it i might do that. How would you guys go about making about that hp? I just want a good reliable truck. and also what do you guys get for fuel economy around that hp? Thanks for replies

I hope your friends with a tranny tech. either way to build the auto or 5 speed swap your looking a couple grand. You could go the same route as myself with a p pump. not really required though Make sure you got good airflow in and out. second timing and pump tuning play a big role in making numbers. A big set of injectors like a 6x14 will be what you'll want, big intercooler and a good sized turbo. 300hp in a 1st gen will feel like more compared to a 2nd or 3rd gen with 300hp because our trucks weigh in at about 6-7k pounds unlike the newer ones at almost 10k pounds.

id say if you can do the work yourself then swap to a manual...but thats lots of fabrication which is not a problem if you can do it..for someone else to do it im sure they will charge you out the ***...
as far as hp goes what ^^^ he said is right on the money...you will want to do the basic pump mods, fuel pin , timing ect..for your hp goal i would think switching to a p pump would be a waste of money..a VE pump can reach 500hp...you will of course need injectors and a good turbo... a lot of first gen guys will pick up a used turbo off of a newer cummins like a 08 or something...i think there a hx35 (someone correct me if im wrong) but i think that turbo would be a good size for your hp goal. i think it could easily get you into the low 300hp and if you tune it good then you could get even more.

Just to let you know on a 94-early 95 you will find a WH1c it's an H1C like on a 1st gen with a wastegated housing. Then there's the HX35 with the 12cm wastregated housing decent upgrade but not the best that can be found on 95-02 truck 98.5-02 on standards only autos in those years had an hy35 with a 9cm exhaust housing. STAY AWAY.
People like HE351vgt on the 1st gens that I believe is found on 07-current 6.7l cummins. I would personally do the gillet 60mm 7 blade upgrade though now thinking about it the upgrade might not fit the non ic H1C you may need an ic H1C or an HX35 to put the housing and impeller on. Then a 2nd gen intercooler, 3" ic tubes and custom intake horn with a DE 4"tbe from TV diesel.

^^^ once again great info here..p pumps are way easier to get hp out of and you will Also put less stress on the pump when u get into higher hp if your planning on more then 400hp in the future then go ahead and p pump swap.
And the 60mm upgrade of the stock turbo is a great idea and a good size to keep you running cool but not to laggy..it would also save you a good chunk of cash!!!
