Default torque convertor question??!

im looking into buying an ATS 5 disc torque convertor. do i need to do any other changes to the tranny to install this? i have heard of people breaking input shafts from the covertor being very brute and locking hard. is this a good convertor or should i do a triple disc since i wont be making over 500hp for a long time. any input will be appreciated!

Your's is a NON lock-up converter.

The 5-disc you speak of is a Lock-up converter.

If you want to install that converter in your truck, you're gonna have to change to a later transmission (47RH).

What BC said, and the main reason you see input shafts breaking in lockup trucks (94 and newer) is due to folks shifting the trans with the converter locked which is a problem we dont have because the unit has no lockup. That said, it IS possible to break a non lockup input (ask BC ) but you need a pretty significant amount of power and also need to be making high psi boosted launches, again they are not indestructible...just less likely to break than their lockup cousins. If your looking for a non lock low stall converter I would recommend Goerend cause thats whats in mine ( and I LOVE it ), I believe BC`s running a Suncoast which is another top notch company, and then there is Specrite and a whole bunch of lesser known brands to choose from. Now that I have made the whole question and answer deal clear as mud, if ya want a ride in a truck with a Goerend gimme a shout before you spend your hard earned $$$.
