Default external voltage regulator issues HELP!

i had my internal regulator take a dump on me so i wired in an external regulator and followed the write up on here and it worked but my only problem was it kills my battery over night and i cant keep having to jump start the truck before school everymorning. i heard it dies because of the 12v lead directly from the battery so does anyone know where to wire the 12v lead into so it only runs when i turn the key on before starting? thanks for the help

You wired it wrong. One wire to the alt is switched off the ignition it runs to the regulator from the key then to the alt from the regulator. the other wire going to the alt has be switched aswell but goes off the switched hot source right to the alt.

NO NO don't wire the regulator off the alt that's where you drain is right there. Alt's have an electrical field that is turned on by those wires. You need the wire going to the regulator to come off a switched source not straight off the battery. Same goes for the other small wire going to the ALT. The ONLY wire that needs to constantly hot is that big wire that charges the battery.

This is how you need to wire it.

Thanks. I've done that once before myself so. One of these days I might wire in a regulator n just not hook it up as I do a good bit of out of town driving n if my pcm ever fails I can still get myself home.

Your current one should be good still if you havn't fried it some how. Also run a ground wire off one of the bolts holding it down to the cab over to the head or better yet the negative battery post.
