Default Cold Air Intakes for First Gens

I'm wanting to do a CAI on my first gen. 91.5, intercooled.

Do you guys have an opinion on the Amsoil 4510 Nanofiber Air Filter with a precharger?

I've only found one company that make CAIs for 1st gens:

1st Gen Cummins Cold Air Intake - Icebox Cold Air Intake Systems

Pretty ridiculous price. Since I don't have a welder what do you guys think it would cost to have someone fab it? Is a closed box better than open? I've also seen people use 2nd gen kits, I think? What do you guys think is the best to lower egts and increase power? And how much of an increase could I excpect?

You might see quicker spool up and might see some increase in MPG. You may see lower egts by 100-200 degrees if you lucky. I would just fab my own up just buy a good filter and use some pipe and fab one, or have someone fab you one. It will be cheaper than purchasing one, I believe.

The cooler the air the more dense the air, which allows more potential for that air to produce power. So this means a closed off system getting cooler air from outside the engine bay should produce more power.

I would do a search and you can find alot of pics of what guys have done to their trucks for a homemade intake. There's quite a few threads on it.

Sounds good. I can do the piping, but not the shield. The icebox is $275 just for the shield, they don't even include a new pipe. Isn't the stock tube somewhat restrictive too?

Isn't the stock intake basically closed off already? Aside from the elbow/tube on the bottom.

No the stock inlet tube is not real restrictive. The most restrictive thing is going to be the filter element. You can just replace with a higher flow filter element in your stock box and get close to the same flow as an aftermarket intake system.
