Default KDP Carnage!

First off, I know I'm an idiot, had the truck for about a year, got the kit, but haven't fixed it yet, my fault. Let's move on...

So the KDP got me.

I was out and about when I came out of the store I noticed a puddle of oil under my truck. It appeared to be the crank seal. I drove it home (no unusual noises or anything else except oil leaking).

I got around to fixing it today and found the cover looked craked.

When everything was pulled off, there it was, the dowel pin sitting there, cover broken off, but at least the gears looked good.

**NEWBIE ALERT**
Seen the stuff in peoples sig about "KDP killed", but Ive had the 12 Valve newbie-itis (the fear of asking stupid questions to seasoned 12 valve mechanics), so therefore I have no clue what the KDP is, and how to "kill it.'' Could someone please fill me in? Because I dont want this junk happening to me!!

The Killer Dowel Pin (KDP) is just what it is, a dowel pin used to align the front cover to the block during assembly. Some where fine and stayed in place others work loose and fall out and get caught in gears, break cam, teeth on gears, covers ect... There is a kit you can buy or make your own. Just make a tab that will cover the dowel pin and use the existing bolt to the right of it or a slightly longer bolt with thread locker.

I did get very lucky. My truck only has 165k miles.

To take the case off, I have to remove the cam?

Anyone have a how to, or service manual?

No, just take the belt, fan and oil fill neck off then you have to pull the balancer (crank pulley), then take the 1 million 10mm bolts out of the cover and get that out of the way and you have access to it.

He is talking about the aluminum case not the cover.

Brain fart...yes you will have to pull the cam to take the gear housing off. With a little digging you should be able to find someone who has a thread about replacing the front cover. Ill see what I can find.
