what year engine?

Is there a way I can tell what year the engine is that I bought? The guy i bought it from said it was out of a 1997 fedex truck.

There should be a casting on the side of the block that says when it was produced.

Look on the info tag on the gear casing near the injection pump. towards the bottom it should say the build date.

There is no tag. It is a short block I bought

you could get the part number off the p pump if you have one google the number and it will tell you what pump it is try to find the size a 215 97.5-98.5 185 96.5-97.5 165 96.5-94 i think anyone correct me if im wrong

The manual trucks from 96-97.5 had a 215 hp pump and the automatics had a 180 pump, the 94-95 sticks and the automatics were different but lower hp than the later year models.
