Default Another Auto Tranny Problem..

Hey guys!

I hope your not sick of the all of the tranny problems yet!

So I have a 1995 3500 12 valve with the automatic and is bone stock. When I first start my truck in the morning, I will start to go and it will shift into 2nd gear find but wont shift into 3rd or 4th. But once the truck warms up a little more (about half mile from my house) it will randomly shift fine and be okay for the rest of the day. Another thing I noticed is that when I nail it from a stop it will shift into 2nd then to 3rd, but then right when it shifts to 3rd it will kick back down to 2nd then right back into 3rd again. Not sure if the two problems are related but I feel it has to be the TPS. Hopefully the tranny isn't taking a crap.

Hopefully you guys have an idea of what the problem(s) could be!
Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks!!

i do believe you are looking ion the right direction. stock trannys shift funny when they are cold and take a long time to get to OD if that was a concer aswell. when the TC starts to go out you will know. it will start to jerk like hell in the higher gears when you dont have much load on it.

Thanks for the reply! And also, when I have a load on it like getting on the highway. I'll be flooring it and it will not shift into 3rd for its life. Even after it warms up. I will have to let off and ease onto the throttle for it to shift. Would a shift kit and TC fix this?

Does it shift funny only in colder weather. I just got a 95 had the trans rebuilt new everything with shft kit and converter and didn't notice any shift problems until the last cold snap and it does what your are describing. I think it is the trans temp sensor, think it is supposed to operate that way when cold but not sure. I have not had a chance to check TPS voltage on it yet it is at body shop getting new paint. 3k governor spring kit will help with the acceleration shift. Will let the truck keep pulling and get to the shift point.

Thanks for the info. I will check my TPS and try to adjust my throttle valve. I can't really tell if it only does it in the cold. I bought this truck about a week before all the big snow storms and cold weather. But I notice when its about 40-50 degrees it doesn't take a while to shift into 3rd and 4th. But it still hesitates and kicks back to second when I'm running it hard.

How do you like those 3.54 gears Torkjunky? I've been looking into getting some lower gears. Right now I have 4.11's and I can only get to about 70 mph.

On the 94 It is almost to high but on the hwy it will get right a 20 mpg at 70 mph. It has 265/70/17 tires and in town I have to run with the OD of cause it will lug and shake the truck at 45 mph when the converter locks, rpm's are about 1200. The 95 has 245/75/16 it doesn't do it, couple hundred rpm difference. 70 mph 1800 rpm on the 94 and just over 2000 on the 95. Haven't got the check the milage on the 95 yet. Tried when I was bringing it home but the OD went out at OKC, had to run the remaining 200 miles at 60 mph at 2500 rpm. Was haveing to stop about every 50 t0 60 miles to put oil in it. Had a hole in the timing cover where the dowel pin shot trough it. Fixed and all is well now.
My buddy has a 97 4x4 with 4.10 gears. I have driven it, I think if the OD quit it would have a hard time running 60. He clams it does really well on fuel.

3.73 would probably be a good gear for ya. I had a 03 with 6 speed, 3.73. Got good milage and would pull real well.

higher gears = lower # like 3.54
lower gears = higher # like 4.11

Yeah haha. Oops! Thanks for pointing it out though!

That definitely makes sense Torkjunky. My truck bogs pretty bad now in OD cruising around town. I can't imagine 3.54 gears. I will look into those 3.73's!! Thanks a ton! Let me know if you ever figure any tranny problems out!
