So research is the big starting place for me. I made the mistake before becoming a member here of not taking my time and reading enough blogs and Internet posts on what to do and it cost me money I didn't need to spend, like the fuel plate. There is a lot good information like how to grind your fuel plate that would have saved me $265.00. There are people on this forum that run without them. For me I wanted a plate in my pump because I read you can damage the pump without one, which makes since to me as it stops the fuel slide from traveling to far and possibly causing damage. When you read enough you find out that you slide the plate all the way forward and the housing as well. This, with a bigger exhaust, I went to a 4" aFe, and a better intake, I went with an aFe Blade Runner, and you get a decent boost in the HP department. Now, the stock transmission is at risk in a big way and keeping your foot out of the peddle is really hard to do. I ordered the Georend full rebuild with billet flex plate, billet 3 disk converter, and a billet input shaft. I did a lot of research on this as this is pretty big dollars and Dave Georend seems to be the defacto expert in the field and is very competitive in price. Another place you find a lot of variation in price is in the injector department, I went to Pensacola Fuel Injection and for $200.00 I got a set of Stage 2 Injectors (70hp-90hp), no core charge. Now, I will probably buy 140 hp (5*.012 I think) Injector Tips and upgrade my stock Injectors but the Stage 2s I got were pop tested and my messing around will likely not be but I have a solid fall back plan. People here have done this and been successful which saves about $300.00. Another thing I have found is every piece costs ~$500.00 - $1000.00 so research is key if you don't have extra money to through around, even a set of head studs costs ~$400.00.
If your going to get into this expect to get your transmission built very soon if not first or go manual, which I have not researched.
Good luck!
