4x4

Why won't my truck go into 4x4 at all I tried to shut it off and put it in park and neutral ????

pukie370 03-21-2011 12:36 AM

is it the shifter wont move? or does the light not come on? either a transfercase issue, or vacume control. the best way to put truck in 4x4 is when you are driving slowley at coast, then if it does not go in just give it a very small amount of gas. but always stop for low range.

The light won't come on or anything it went in gear once and popes right out.. And my tranny is pretty much gone so could that cause anything??

pukie370 03-21-2011 02:09 AM

if the shifter wont go in to gear it might just be shifter adjustment, but you need to be more specific. your trany should not cause 4x4 prob. does 4x4 shifter click in to 4x4? or does it not move? will it go in to low? you may have to put truck in reverse and lightley let clutchout to get in. Is this new problem? New truck?

I have that problem too. dealer in kentucky told me it worked and i stupidly believed them. My transfer case will shift in and the driveshaft will take the power to the axle but it won't shift in. When i bought it, it was a manual pull axle disconnect. However that didn't work right and wouldn't adjust right so i pulled it out and put in the vaccum. however there is not enough of a vaccum at the end to pull the shaft into place. I think what you (and me) are going to have to do is run new vaccum lines from the transmission and replace all the diaphrams inbetween.:dang:

Just put a pull cable on it. The vacum control on these trucks is retarded.

check your pinion gear & bearings

either put a cable on it or you can take the fork out and tack on each side of the collar where it is suppose to be in 4wd. the forks get wore and bent up on some trucks and cause a lot of problems.

Amen Pappy!:tu: I fought mine for years replacing axle bushings and driveshafts vaccuum pods and shift forks. Last year when we were covered up with snow it left me stranded I got it home and slid the ring in place and slapped a little flux core on it. Now its a live front end no vaccuum problems just pull the T case lever it has no choice but to work.:jump:.

what do you mean? explain further. I had a pull cable on it but it didn't work right. I couldn't get it to fully engage. and yes, i tried adjusting it.
