Im gonna have to disagree and say its not hard to get to without the motor being out of the truck. Take care of it now before it decides to leave on its own accord and for gods sake dont pull the motor to do it! I did mine, along with timing, fuel plate, water pump, etc in less than 8 hours and thats stoppin for lunch and what not...
Its not hard to do with the engine in the truck, just takes some time to get it done. When I did my KDP, it took me about an hour and a half. That's never touched a Cummins before. Do some reading, look at pics, do it now. It will save you A LOT of headache.
you dont have to pull the cover to tab it, i had a jig that bolts to the cover so i could drill and tap the side of the case and install a bolt so the pin cant come out, i just did that too late,
