Default NV4500 questions

finally gettin stuff around to make my truck what i want it to be, 5 SPEED! i'm ordering my southbend dual disc and input shaft this week. before i put the transmission in tho, i want to address the 5th gear issue. i've heard some people say welding the nut works n some say it doesn't. whats the best thing to do? also how do i get to the 5th gear nut? is it just inside the rear housing on the tranny? any pictures would be awesome too.

and another question, how much of a pain is it to swap input shafts?
any other weak spots in the trans i should know about?
thanks guys

5th gear nut you just pop off the OD housing (10mm 12 point IIRC) to get to it. Some weld it, it doesn't back off, dan at quad4x4 recommends a new nut with the factory thread lock on it, use the proper socket, torque it properly and it should hold up completely fine.

The input isn't hard to swap, however you should check/shim for runout. I wouldn't mess with it if you don't have to.

ONLY ONLY ONLY use GL4 fluid, dodge and GM sell the same stuff in different bottles, amsoil and RP also make a proper fluid. I've got the best price on the amsoil. Overfill it by 1 qt and it quiets down quite a bit.

There is a aftermarket nut they make for the tranny that you torque to (i think) 170 to 180 FT LBS. I think the Factory one torques to 70 to 80 FT LBS..

Maybe thats the one I got. It took some work to get it to spec. Its supposed to hold better than the dodge replacement with a set screw or w/e.

Easy fix as long as you never have to take it off, I'd just gft the updated nut and fix it right. I lucked out on that one PO had already been down that road.

yeah, welding it would work, but the mainshaft isn't cheap if you ever need to remove it.

If you can fix it with out welding it. I would not weld it then. They also make a better shaft for the fifth gear to. It has longer splines so they will not strip out as fast>

weld it for sure. i bought a main shaft about 3 months ago and it wasnt that high dollar. Just for curiousity here why does everyone go with south bend clutches anyway? i understand that there isnt alot of good choices bu seems everyone has a south bend clutch? Why not a Haisley steet twin clutch?

I've got mine because the price was right. I considered valair but I got a good deal on the SB through my local shop and I can be 100% sure its a solid product.

I wanted a single disk though.
