ok so i finally got around to it yesterday and when i got up under there if i pulled the switch away the lights would stay on so i need to move it closer to the pedal which when i tried that it seems like it make it worse since the switch needs to be pushed in to turn the lights off

Have you tried pulling the plunger all the way out? The black plunger looking thing pulls out and clicks at different intervals for adjustment. They pull out pretty far.
