Default overflow valve question

well ims tarting my p pump swap tomorrow and am in need of a overflow valve. i can get one tomorrow if i drive for an hour for one. but my question is, do i need the valve to put on the pump before the pump goes on. or can i put it on after the pump is already on the engine
