Death Wobble
#11
With 215,000 on her, I've gone through the death wobble thing to varying degrees a number of times. There's a few soft spots in the system, that get magnifyed by slightly worn steering linkage, wheel bearings, and sticky calipers. Once something triggers the start of a wobble, everything kinda works together to make it worse.
I've never been able to correct it replacing one single part, it's usually several slightly worn parts. I've replaced the wheel bearings 3 times on each side, that's usually the biggest culprit. This time around for my truck, I got a steering box from Red Head, an all Moog front end, a DSS, Timken wheel bearings, and Brembo rotors and calipers. If that doesn't make it right, well.....
When you check your wheel bearings, with the caliper off, it should spin freely, but you should still feel some drag. If it spins too freely, it's on it's way out even if you don't feel any play.
