Why is there hissing and black smoke from under the front end??

idk my 97 dosent have hydroboost i would think to check the vac pump too

Oh I suppose thats possible? Its been in the 20's here during the day.. perhaps thats what it is then? I could swear it had a blackish tint to it

Where would the vac pump be located?

its the half of the power steering pump towards the front of the truck.

Actually, 300K *is* a lot. It may have a cummins in it... but it's still a Dodge.

I was messing with the truck today. Pretty positive no hydroboost. The pedal feels car-like, and the brakes/powersteering dont intertwine I dont think.

Good. My hydroboost on my psd was a pain in the ***

then yeah you do have a vac pump, someone correct me but i'm almost sure it only runs the brakes.

Vacumn runs the HVAC 4wd actuator as well as the cruise control I think.

Ohhh thats got me wondering. The cruise control doesn't engage (but the light on the wheel will turn on), and I cant control where the heater directs the heat. Sounds like I may have inadvertantly found the solution to 2 other problems here...
Now to track down that scandellous leak!
