My 3" is straight-piped and doesn't bother me a bit. Maybe I am just getting deaf! Probably too much shooting with no ear protection.

i have a 96 4x4 ext cab auto cali edition eger and all that crap. however i spoke to a couple of guys out here that have done the same as me i straight piped and took all that extra crap off and has been that way for a while now with no problems. the sound in the cab you are worried about its not that bad if yur used to a loud diesel. you actually get a little more juice and looks straight piped. i drove all the way back to pocatello idaho with no problems 7 times now.

Pipe length has a lot to do with it. Reg cab or ext cab SB don't have problems, the LB CC crowd is another story.

AFA dropping the Cat and keeping the muffler, I did that as the first step. In the cab, not a noticeable change in tone, outside was a nice change. Finally rusted out and went to a 4". Got the drone, but deal with it.
