Default Thickness to build a girdle

I tried posting this in general, thought maybe I'd get more responses here. Anyhow For building a girdle for the bottom end any ideas on thickness of steel to use? I've heard anywhere from 1/4 to 5/8. Your thoughts?

If you are going to be using the ARP main studs, I was told 5/8".

Cheaper to just go and guy a girdle from one of the bigger shops(Haisley Machine,Scheids.EEP etc etc) as to make one correctly you will have more time involved than the cost of buying one.
