Default TC coming apart?

Iv got a 97 auto and it has been shifting hard when i take off and throwing sensor codes for the transmission I took it to a shop and they said it was my torque convertor coming apart and there was clutch material in the fluid which is stopping up the sensors and causing it to overheat..They said the convertor coming apart is a common problem to happen on these since stock the TC arnt even strong enough and my truck is turned up so it didnt help they want $1400 for a full rebuild and said it would be mild to heavy duty modified is this a common problem and good price?

Price is cheap enough, but, what kind of work do they do as this is a job you will only want to do once.Call Dave Goerand at his shop and chat with them before you make a hasty decision as just because its cheap does not mean it will handle the job you want it to do..........Andy
