There is a large nut on the backside of the fan. It is left hand thread, which means you push down on the drivers side to loosen it.
I had to clamp a vise-grip on mine (not too tight) and put the end of a 2X4 against it, and whack the other end of the 2X4 with a hammer.
There are other methods.
