Default Starting Problems

hey guys ive had all kinds of heck with my truck over the past few months but now its finally running decent but it takes forever for it to fire up. while it was in the shop they ran a hot wire from the plug off the fuel cut off silenoid down to the starter and now thankfully i dont have to pop the hood every time i try to start it but its just bugging me cause it has a new fuel filter and im just not sure where to start looking now. thanks for all the help. Colt

Wonder if the lift pump is going out and or it's sucking air from a rotten hose.

i honestly dunno. my first thought was the lift pump but after talking to a couple buddies tonight they were thinking possibly that my valves need to be adjusted and my whole fuel system may need to be cleaned out. but i dont think that would make a whole lot of difference but the again i could be wrong. because about 6 months ago it was starting up as soon as you turned the key

Well the valve lash is due every 100k-150k. But I don't see that being the problem. I'm going to bank on the lift pump cause I been there numerous times on the Oldsmobile diesels.

what is your idle at? if you press the accelerator pedal down does it fire up faster? if so then the idle is too low. my 96 did this and i raised my idle to ~850 in gear with the A/C on and it fires right up now.

also make sure that the fuel solenoid is being pulled all the way up when the key is turned on....the boot on it may be damaged and trash could be causing it to be slugish.

i honestly dunno what its idling at i just got the tack working this evening. i will have to make sure that it is going all the way up. they told me that there is a short on the plug in on the silenoid is why they put a hot wire down to the starter from it. but it also made my starter hang up just the other day. it seems like once i get one thing fixed 5 more things start going for the bad

Got one thing going for ya right now, you live in a state that doesn't require Carhart Extreme clothing in the winter.

850 in gear or park?

Should be 800 or so in gear.
