if it is sharing fluid something is wrong... there's actually a fancy little notch that if the output shaft seal in the transmission is leaking it'll drain the fluid kinda like a weep hole on a water pump to let ya know something isn't right. and to my knowledge they do use the same fluids... they've been using ATF as a lubricant in the x-fer cases for.... 20+ years?

To use your transfer case on a stick tranny you will need a different input shaft for the transfer case.
The fluid as stated are different in a stick and transfer case but use the same when its a automatic. They do not share fluids unless you have an issue with the seal in between them and then its a alot of work for a seal which cost less than $10.
I took the automatic transmission fliud out of my transfer case about 150k ago.I run a Schaeffer Oil moly based synthetic gear lube in 20w instead and have had no issues or wear problems at all. While Ma Mopar thinks that tranny fluid is ok it really has minimal lubricating purposes so I removed it........Andy
