i just tried that.
i compressed the spring and gave the top of the compressor a few pretty good wacks and nothing happened.
the spring/valvestem/retainer can feely move up and down all together about a 1/4 inch

The keepers are split and they shouldn't move up and down with the spring, neither should the valvestem. The idea is to push the spring down without the valvestem moving at all. If you're doing this in the truck, make sure that your piston is at the right position, it sounds like maybe the valve is just falling into the cylinder. This could be a huge problem if you manage to get it apart as the valve will fall into the cylinder. If you're doing this with the head off the truck, make sure you hold the valve from the bottom so it doesn't move down.
