Default Transmission cooling and the heat exchanger

Hey guys I was wondering what exactly the heat exchanger does for the old 12V. I know it sounds like a stupid question but how does it work and why is it there? Evidently the transmission oil goes through it on the way to to cooler or on the way back from it. In which direction does it flow? Why does the tube have antifreeze coolant lines run to it? If I already have a stock transmission cooler then I don't get it.
